Brazillian Beauty

This is yet another piece... where photos simply can't capture "it". There's something about this box... it's a BEAUTY... inside and out.
The main body is constructed using an absolutely gorgeous piece of Goncalo Alves- a hardwood originating from Brazil. This is the last of a board I carried around for years- with this beautiful crotch figure jutting right through the top. There is, what I refer to as, an exoskeleton (or overlay) of Munn Ebony- which accentuates the natural figures/shapes of the Goncalo Alves- and adds a unique layered effect. Again- photos cannot capture the beautiful tones present in this type of Ebony- there are even hints of green. The Box really didn't come together for me until well into the finishing stages- that happens sometimes- and it's always a wonderful surprise. The ample- but subtle accents of genuine Mastadon Ivory, along with the distinct design of the interior just brought the life into this box.
I had originally planned to do a nice, elegant, tan colored interior- which would let the wood speak for itself... but it just was not to be! I saw Red! This is like piecing together puzzle pieces for me- but having to first- make the puzzle! I hand fit, cut, and dye the leather- for this box using Oxblood, and Chocolate Brown for color. The inside just "pops"... another instance where you really do need to see it in person to appreciate the full effect.
I even carved my signature Ebony and Ivory Woodworks Logo a little different than I normally do- to blend with the theme of the box - it all ties in.
I use only the highest quality, solid brass hardware- which is finished with a gold tinted lacquer. This finish is non-tarnishing for a lifetime of beautiful shine.
The box is finished with a Satin Sheen- obtained by tedious hand sanding, and multiple coats of a Modified Tung Oil Finish- which seals and protects the hardwoods. I like using Oil finish for some pieces- a hard shine (as in a lacquer finish) just would not have "fit" for this one.
This is a gorgeous creation... it will be hard to part with! (2007).
This piece now resides in it's new home in England
