From the Surf

This box is one of my favorites. I carried around this particular piece of Goncalo Alves for years... it had such beautiful figure in it. With a piece like this you don't even want to cut into it until you have a vision for it's use. I call this piece From the Surf because the figure in the Goncalo Alves emulates the surf, and in parts even the curl of a wave... it's unbelievable in person. I used Lignum Vitae, and a thin lamination of dyed purple Maple veneer for accents. The body is assembled, then screwed together for assured strength and durability. The Goncalo Alves corner pieces hide the screws, and act as feet for the box. It is hinged with the highest quality, solid Brass hardware, which have a 110 deg stop. I recently started lining the inside of my boxes with leather... it just has so much depth, and even the aroma adds a luxerious sensation when it wafts out. I hand dyed and cut the leather, then added a subtle shape, to an other-wise "hard" appearance, by creating the diagonal seams which run through the pieces.
For this box I used a water-based lacquer finish... my personal favorite! It is a urethane/acrylic co-polymer, which produces a very hard, durable, and transparent film. This type of finish is so beautiful to use. I get very connected to my pieces during the tedious polishing process... which is done by hand with cut polish. From the Surf is inalid for authenticity with my hand carved genuine Ebony and Ivory Woodworks logo. This Box is Amazing... I only wish you could touch it! (I keep trying to describe it... it's like glass with butter on it)
