Knife Block
This was a commissioned piece ordered for a local resident of Prince George as a gift. The knife block was designed especially for a wonderful set of hand made stainless steel kitchen knives. This was my first knife block and I felt very lucky that it would be for such a beautifully unique knife set. I had to design something functional and stylish that would fit nicely in with the elegant home. I, and my client, wanted something very unique and artisitic. I hand dyed pieces of very exotic walnut burl veneers until I reached the desired colors… creating an exquisite dark blue/green/purple marbling effect. This is one more instance where the photographs just can’t do justice. Each knife slot was strategically placed, shaped, and lined with uhmw (ultra high molecular weight plastic) for a friction free precision fit – which also avoids dulling of the knives. I laminated the solid cherry core with my dyed veneers, installed stainless steel ball bearing feet on the front, and 2 adjustable chrome coated feet on the back- so that it could always be adjusted for assured stability. I knew it would encounter some moisture being in a kitchen setting… so it was finished with a water based lacquer finish. I made the inlaid logo to match the themes of the block, so instead of ebony and ivory, I used ebony and sterling silver. The owners of this piece were pleasantly surprised with their custom creation and the knife block resides in Prince George, B.C. (2003)
